Oxfam in Jordan | Research on humanitarian AI in the MENA region
Shared Planet authored a report on the use of AI in the humanitarian and development fields across the MENA region.
Shared Planet was retained by Oxfam Jordan to research and draft a comprehensive white paper/research report on the use of AI in the humanitarian and development sectors by NGOs. The project aimed to better understand how AI and new technologies can be used in the field to provide positive humanitarian impact, as well as understand the challenges that may occur and how to best mitigate risks.
The report draws on qualitative methods to help survey the landscape to understand AI’s impact in the H&D fields and create a set of principles and framework for action. Methodologically, the report provides a comprehensive literature report, analyses several case studies and stakeholder interviews with over 15 critical voices in the field of humanitarian action and technology/AI. The report also provides a set of recommendations and a principled framework of action that Oxfam Jordan can adopt in its own use of AI throughout its work.
Oxfam AI focuses on three key areas: climate justice, economic justice and gender justice in Jordan and throughout the MENA region. Currently, it also grapples with the ongoing effects of destabilising conflict in the region. This report will help Oxfam and its internal stakeholders understand how AI can transform — or harm — its efforts to promote humanitarian action.
